Netsuke Sculptures

I am drawn to the intimacy of this size sculpture. Contained, contemplative and curvaceous, they rest convincingly in the palm of the hand. Of solid slow-fired terracotta, sculpted all around with a salt-fired effect achieved using locally gathered seaweeds, the work honours the sacred and sometimes quizzical in animals and humans. I often allow the natural shapes in the clay to guide the direction of the piece to its final elegant, stylized form.
